Professor John Paul Rollert graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor degree, and earned his JD from Yale Law School and a PhD from The John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Since 2005, he has taught courses at Harvard in ethics, politics, and leadership.

John Paul Rollert's teaching and research focus on the intellectual history of capitalism, the ethics of leadership, and the application of empathy to law, business, and politics. He is also interested in the political economy and moral philosophy of Adam Smith.

Rollert's academic writing has been published by Critical Inquiry, The Journal of Law, Culture and the Humanities, Business and Society Review, Modernism/modernity, Society, The Yale Law Journal, and the Business and Professional Ethics Journal. In addition to his academic work, Rollert frequently writes on business, law, and politics for a variety of popular publications. He writes the In-House Ethicist for the Chicago Booth Review, and his work has been featured in  Fortune, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Paris Review, and The New York Times. For writing featured in The Atlantic, he was recognized by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in its 2017 “Best in Business” Competition.

Interview Questions:

1. Do you think you are a leader? If yes, what kind of leader are you? What is your core value and long-term vision?

2. As a professor teaching leadership courses for about 20 years, have you observed some significant changes in leadership over the past two decades? If yes, would you please share more about that?

3. Some students mentioned in our leadership class that no female leaders were covered in the readings and discussions, and you replied humbly that you didn’t know much about female leaders. But I believe that you do have your insights. What are the most important advantages that you make of female leaders in comparison with males?

4. Before I came to Harvard for this summer school, I asked for feedback about my leadership skills from the global VP of the company I am currently working for. He shared his observation that asian employees tend to be overly humble( keep silent) in taking credit for their achievements and feel shy in asking for what they really need. What is your understanding of being humble as a leadership quality, especially in the context of the US?

5. How do you think AI is shaping leadership?
