AEE 2315: Who Asked You? Rude Phrases to Avoid in English
do you ever worry that you're saying something rude to someone in English ?
1. who asked you ?
this is implying that someone gave an unwanted opinion or should not have spoken. this is very rude like there's no way that you can said this. it's always rude . sending this message i don't care about your opinion, noboday ask for it.
eg, i think you should break up with this guy.
who asked you ?
i don't think you should take that job.
who asked you ?
2. mind your own business.
say it in a playful way that's acceptable, but still avoid using it. always impolite .
this is a tipical way典型的方式 to break a connection, i don't care what you mean.
eg, you really should test your drive, you know ?
mind your own business.
3. figure it out.
to tell someone to do something on their own without asking for help.
but there's a sort of another meaning that we use which is more polite, "i need to figure it out ", there's no rudeness, means i need to discover发现 找到 查明 how to do something.
when you say something to end a conversation, that it can be very rude.
eg, i don't know what to do.
you need to figure it out. ( with zero empathy同情 共鸣/ understanding, zero trying to help, let's figure it out together, or giving any kind of grace.)
this instruction用法说明 吩咐 指示 is just don't make any sense.
i don't know, figure it out.

even if you're trying to be sarcastic or use sarcastic internation 国际间的, these phrases will still be rude.

role play
did you just put in three sugar packets包 ?
ok mind you own business.
sugar is so bad for you.
dude 伙计 老哥, who asked you, i like mix sugar with coffee and cream, thank you very much.
i mean every now is ok, but everyday ? you got to figure it out.
