In this episode, Bessie sits down with Axel and Max Stürken, the Co-CEOs of Leuchtturm1917, a premium stationery brand that has stood the test of time. As the company approaches its 108th anniversary, the brothers discuss their journey of transforming a traditional family-run business into an industry leader in high-quality notebooks. From stamp collecting albums to coin collections and finally to the globally recognized Leuchtturm notebooks, Axel and Max share how their company has adapted, innovated, and thrived in an increasingly digital world.

The conversation explores the impact of digitalization, why handwriting remains relevant, how the brand’s annual color themes came to life, and why they have resisted going public despite numerous acquisition offers.

They emphasize a core principle that has guided their success: focusing on customer needs and refining the details. Whether it’s introducing numbered pages, custom indexes, new color palettes, or even waterproof notebooks, Leuchtturm1917 continuously evolves by listening to its customers and responding with thoughtful product innovations.

Whether you’re a stationery lover, entrepreneur, or creative thinker, this episode offers deep insights into heritage branding, business resilience, and the enduring magic of writing by hand—because writing is thinking on paper.

Quotes That Inspire:

📝 “Writing is thinking on paper.”

📝 “The more digital our world becomes, the more people turn back to real, tangible experiences.”

📝 “We don’t create disposable products—our notebooks are made to last, just like the ideas people put inside them.”

📝 “We love being independent—keeping the company family-run allows us to focus on quality, not quarterly reports.”

📝 “People don’t just buy a notebook; they buy a tool that helps them reflect, create, and remember.”

As a loyalist to hand writing and note taking, I feel so resonated with those “goosebump” messages that Bessie shared in this episode: writing is thinking on paper, writing is to stay, writing sets you free. (I’m a corporate executive so lovely notebooks are my daily delights and pleasures during endless meetings…)
I am also fascinated by how this brand originated from the “never changing” collector-based business/consumer segments, to now adapting to short-attention consumers navigating amidst paper, digital and all other modern devices (e.g. by introducing color theme of the year) while still adhering to its principles of high quality and family legacies. Thanks Bessie for putting together such a wonderful session. I really enjoyed it!

Writing is thinking in paper.

There is a strong desire to write by hand. There is an emotional aspect to it. It is something different to type compared to writing your own thoughts, making notes, or adding drawings. There’s a lot of research that writing by hand is different from typing. Scientists conducted a study where students were divided into two groups—one took notes by typing, and the other by writing. Weeks later, they tested what the students recalled from the lesson. Those who wrote by hand were able to remember more. The explanation is that when you type, you are much quicker, especially if you are skilled at it. When writing by hand, you are slower, which forces you to process the information and only write down the most important things. This is why handwritten notes are easier to remember than typed ones.

I could never imagine I may leave a message here in English, as you all can figure out my English is not that good. But the moment I see the pictures of the customized notebook in the shownotes, I decide to take any chance to get the fantactics notebooks. To be honest, I happen to be looking for a new notebook.😍
